Type or to move the edit 1 frame left or right. To move an edit point, select the edit point, then, assuming you have enough handles: ] – (Right square bracket) Selects the In on the left edge.[ – (Left square bracket) Selects the Out on the right edge. You don’t need to enter punctuation and if you enter, say, 45, FCP will do the math for you and translate that to 1:15 for a 30 fps project. For example, to set all three of these clips to three seconds, type “ 300” (without the quotes). Then, enter the duration you want to apply to the clips in timecode format: 00:00:00:00. To change the duration of one or more clips, select the clips you want to adjust and type Control + D. To accept your changes and exit the Precision Editor, type either ESC or RETURN. This is the best example I’ve ever seen on how trimming depends upon extra media.īut, the disadvantage of the Precision Editor is that you can’t edit audio separately from video in other words, do a split edit. What I REALLY like about the Precision Editor is that you can see how much extra media, called “handles,” exists after the Out or before the In. Drag the white box in the middle to trim both the In and the Out (a “roll” trim). Drag the edge of a clip to trim the In or the Out (a “ripple” trim). This displays the out-going clip (top) and the in-coming clip. So, in the interest of speeding your trimming, here are some tricks and techniques to make you a faster trimmer.ĭouble-click any edit point to display the Precision Editor. In fact, I find myself spending more time trimming than in deciding the order of my clips. We trim to make an edit less obtrusive, to advance the story, to alter the emotion of the edit or to bring a sequence into time. However, by using Effect Presets, everything is fine since you are only making a reference to the effect.Trimming is the process of adjusting where two clips touch in the timeline. if you have saved a copy of the ENTIRE Effect object, then you won't benefit from the updates. Imagine in the future that the owner of the Effect decides to update it with improvements/bug fixes. because if you use Effect Presets then you are simply referencing the original Effect object. because they will all be in one spot!Īdditional Note: This solution is superior to the concept of making duplicates of your favorite effects (the actual Motion projects) and putting them into a "Favorites" folder. You won't have to keep clicking around, typing search text, and scrolling in the Effects browser anymore. If you make one preset for each built-in Effect that you use often, you can save them all under one new Category (call it something like "My Favorite Effects") and then in the Effects browser, they will all appear together in one spot. It's not the exact solution I was looking for, but it's the closest thing! I did find another solution to help keep my fingers on the keyboard. But you cannot bind multiple, different effects to different keyboard shortcuts. Even inside the "Command Editor" mentioned by German Dude, you only have ONE shortcut for applying effects, which is for applying the current Default Effect. So it appears there is no (built-in) option in FCPX to make separate keyboard short-cuts for separate Effects.
